Papers : Brown's relief

Wes Brown has admitted it was a relief when Sir Alex Ferguson finally told him this summer it was time to leave Old Trafford. Brown believes the resulting move to Sunderland has given him a new lease of life after two years on the periphery of Ferguson’s team. Although Brown made 361 appearances for United, he was nothing more than a member of the supporting cast as they lifted the Premier League title last season. “In a funny kind of way, it’s a bit of a relief when someone like Sir Alex sits you down and tells you how it is,” said Brown. “I wasn’t playing last season, so I knew things weren’t really right, and I couldn’t really see myself getting back into the team in any sort of meaningful way. In my mind, I sort of knew which way things were heading, but I guess you don’t really want to admit that to yourself until you have to. Deep down, I think I knew I had to do something. You inevitably start questioning what’s going on, so Sir Alex’s decision wasn’t really a surprise. I saw it coming and I think I’d got my head around it.”
