Dimitar Berbatov's agent: Manchester United have not been in touch about a new contract but he wants to stay

Bulgarian's representative has not heard from club's executives regarding an extension despite having just one year left on current deal, but says striker is happy at Old Trafford

Dimitar Berbatov's future at Manchester United has been cast into further doubt after his agent revealed he has had no contact from the Old Trafford club since the end of the season.

The Bulgarian striker has just one year left on his current contract and talks have stalled over a new deal as Berbatov felt he deserved a better offer than a one-year rolling deal after topping the Premier League scoring charts last season with 21 goals.

Berbatov, who cost £30.75m when he signed from Tottenham in the sumer of 2008, was left out of the 18-man squad for the Champions League final defeat to Barcelona, and is attracting interest from a number of clubs across Europe.

His agent, Emil Dantchev, has now admitted that his client's future is up in the air and says he has had no contact from chief executive David Gill or manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

“There is no news because we have not heard anything from anyone,” say Dantchev. “After we speak to Manchester United, we will know more but now he is very happy to be a Manchester United player.

“Many clubs would be interested in Dimitar but he wants to stay in Manchester and win more trophies. He has a contract and he is not paying attention to the British media.”

Berbatov admitted his was “ashamed” of his Champions League final snub and United are believed to be ready to sell him this summer and recoup some of their initial outlay, rather than risk letting him leave for free next June.

Tottenham have been mooted as a possible destination because of United's interest in Luka Modric, but the north Londoners are unlikely to be interested following his acrimonious departure from White Hart Lane three years ago.

German giants Bayern Munich have been linked with a £10m bid while the former Bayer Leverkusen man has told friends he would be interested in a move to Spain or even Turkey.
